Cannabis For the First Time

If you are interested in trying cannabis for the first time, here is a simple guide to help you think through how you want to try the herb. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will do our best to make sure you have a positive experience.

How do you want to experience cannabis?

Cannabis can be smoked, vaped, ingested, or applied topically. We recommend vaping as the healthiest and safest option, but decide which method is easiest for you. Edibles are risky because it is difficult to be confident in the dose without knowing how your body will respond to the herb. It is also tricky to determine the specific strain of cannabis in the edibles available at a dispensary. However, brands like Kiva are very specific about their recommended dose, so if you want to start with a chocolate bar or blueberry bites, Kiva is one brand you can trust.

What time of day do you want to experience cannabis and how do you want to feel?

Every person is different, so it is important to evaluate what you want to gain from cannabis and at what time of day. If you are stressed and anxious and want relief during the day, I would recommend starting with a hybrid. If you have sleeping issues or physical pain, an indica may be the most effective option for you. If you are trapped creatively and need some inspiration, you may benefit from a sativa. Research each strain on websites and apps like Leafly to fully understand all of the options available.

How much should you start with?

If you are choosing to smoke or vape, evaluate the strains and pick a type of cannabis that feels right for you. When you go to the dispensary, smell the various types of cannabis and trust your intuition when picking a strain that smells best. I recommend starting with a gram of indica, sativa, and a hybrid so you can fully evaluate what works best with your body. The biggest challenge is determining whether your body works best with sativas, indicas, or hybrids. Often when people have a negative response to cannabis, it is not that cannabis doesn't work for them, but rather, that they haven't found the best strain for their body. If you are able to access a vape like a Pax, you could start by inhaling a hybrid once and waiting to feel the effects. You may have to try a single hit of each type of cannabis before fully understanding what your body needs.

Start slow. Try one inhalation of a different strain on different days. Evaluate how you feel and be open to testing multiple strains before you are confident in what works best for you. Each individual is different. With enough patience and support, you will find the right strain of cannabis and the right application mechanism that works for you.
